Health Visitor Services

0-5 Children’s Service

All families with a child under five in Darlington have access to a Growing Healthy 0-5 Team consisting of health visitors, early years practitioners and infant feeding specialists. They provide expert health assessments, advice, support and interventions for babies, children and families.

The team encourages and supports parents and carers to develop life-long skills to enable them to make informed choices that affect their family’s future health and wellbeing.

The team is community-based and is accessible at a range of different venues including the family home, children’s centres and health centres. The service works in partnership with other agencies to ensure all families receive support.

Our 0-19 service consists of health visitors, school nurses, nursery nurses , staff nurse’s,  health care assistants and school nursing assistants.  

The 0-19 team work as part of wider community teams with GP, midwives, Children’s Centres, Paediatricians, Speech Therapists, Nurseries, Schools, Sexual Health Services to provide care and support to promote children’s’ well-being and prevention of harm.

Our 0-5 team offer home visits to all families in the community of South Tyneside, from pregnancy through to school entry, as recommended by the national Child Health Promotion Programme. If you’re a parent, the team will support you with your own health needs and will help you develop a healthy lifestyle. They also provide ‘drop in’ baby clinics and tailor support to your child’s individual and family needs. Every child has a named health visitor until they reach school entry.

School nursing

Provide a service to all children and young people of school age, and their families, whether or not they are attending school. They offer advice and information, and assess health needs on children entering school and on transfer to secondary schools.

They offer information and advice, and assess health needs on children entering school and on transfer to secondary schools. They are the first point of contact for schools when there are concerns about a child’s health and wellbeing.

When young people and families require targeted interventions, these may be provided solely by the School Nursing Team or delivered in partners. They work as part of the Integrated Team approach in County Durham known as One Point.

Sexual Health Services

There are clinics in Carlisle, Whitehaven, Workington, Kendal and Barrow. The service provides sexual health, contraception and HIV care. The clinics provide free, confidential, non-judgemental advice, guidance, and support. The service offers free testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and all methods of contraception. Each clinic has a minimum of one late night clinic per week to ensure that patients have more choice with regard to their appointments

The health visitors work with parents and carers in North Tyneside to ensure that children have the best start in life and are able to achieve their full potential.

Every family with children under five has a named health visitor who offers support and encouragement through the early years from pregnancy and birth, to primary school and beyond to support you to stay healthy and avoid illness.

They provide a wide-ranging service to children and their families and we can also refer you to other services to support you with more specialist problems.

When you become pregnant you will have a named health visitor assigned to you and you will receive a home visit before your baby is born.

You can expect support and information about:

  • Family health and wellbeing including support for mothers with postnatal depression
  • Infant feeding with special knowledge of breast feeding
  • Parenting
  • A child’s growth and development – including advice for a child who is either underweight or overweight

Our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is here to help children and young people up to 18 years old, and their families in North Tyneside.

Young people come and see us for lots of different reasons, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-harm
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

You may meet several different kinds of professionals in CAMHS.  All of our staff are trained in assessing children and young people, and some staff have additional specialist training. You will be told who you will be coming to see before you come and see us, and this may include a:

Health Visitor Services

The health visitors work with parents and carers in North Tyneside to ensure that children have the best start in life and are able to achieve their full potential.

Every family with children under five has a named health visitor who offers support and encouragement through the early years from pregnancy and birth, to primary school and beyond to support you to stay healthy and avoid illness.

They provide a wide-ranging service to children and their families and we can also refer you to other services to support you with more specialist problems.

When you become pregnant you will have a named health visitor assigned to you and you will receive a home visit before your baby is born.

You can expect support and information about:

  • Family health and wellbeing including support for mothers with postnatal depression
  • Infant feeding with special knowledge of breast feeding
  • Parenting
  • A child’s growth and development – including advice for a child who is either underweight or overweight
  • Common childhood infections/illnesses and immunisation
  • Common skin problems
  • Language development and early learning guidance
  • Behavioural difficulties including sleeping, eating, potty training, temper tantrums
  • Healthy eating, play, safety and exercise
  • Accident prevention
  • Acting as key worker for young children with disabilities
  • Local child health clinics, support groups and parenting groups where you can meet other parents.
  • Supporting your child to get ready for school
