Parents splitting up?

Facing your parents' divorce is never easy. Often the situation at home can add to any other stresses you are already feeling.

It's worth remembering these pointers:

  • It's not your fault. Relationships are complicated, no matter how long people have been together. Parents separate because of issues that are theirs. You didn't cause their separation.

  • Don't let anger get the better of you. It's okay to feel angry but try not to let it control you. Keep up with school or work and the activities you enjoy. If you find yourself feeling frustrated with friends in ways you hadn't before, remember that it might not be them you are really frustrated with. Take a breath and move forward.

  • Don't get drawn into being their go-between – it's not your responsibility to communicate for them.

  • Talk to them. Let them know how you are feeling.  It's OK to tell your parents that you're angry or sad, even if you're worried about their feelings. They are there for you and want to know how you are doing. Let them know what you want for your family as you all move forward.

  • Talk to your close friends. Your friends care about you and want to know how you are feeling. Even though it might be hard to talk about with some friends, don't keep your close ones in the dark. Their support during this difficult time could be a real help.

  • Talk to a professional. If you're having a hard time managing your emotions, there are people who can help.

  • Try to stay positive if you can. If your parents have divorced because they were not happy together, living apart might help them achieve the happiness they deserve.

  • Stay focused on your own goals for the future.
